University of the Aegean (UAegean)
The Aegean University was founded in 1984 and having completed the second phase of development, with 17 departments, 15 Postgraduate programs and 1 Elective Studies Program, the University of the Aegean ranks among the largest universities of the country. The administrative headquarters of the University of the Aegean are in Lesvos island, while holds various departments in the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Rhodes and Syros, setting up a university - a network covering all prefectures of the Aegean. The main characteristic of the Aegean University departments is the development of new disciplines, usually interdisciplinary, which meet both the needs of the contemporary Greek society and global community and the demands and expectations of students of high scientific value studies, coupled with excellent prospects of professional enhancement.
The Aegean University has 327 Professors and Lecturers, and 263 administrators. In Aegean University are enrolled> 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students and doctoral candidates. The University of the Aegean Research Committee is responsible for the management of research programs and establishing research policy of the University of the Aegean. The purpose of the Research Committee is to provide and manage funds from any source, intended to cover expenses of any kind which are necessary for the research needs, education, training, development and continuing training projects and projects for scientific, technological and artistic services, specialized studies, performance testing, laboratory test measurements and analyzes, providing advice, drafting specifications for third parties, as well as other related services or activities that contribute to linking education and research to production and executed or provided by the members of the active scientific staff of the University of the Aegean or in collaboration with other specialists of the Public or Private Law.
The Department of Marine Sciences (TETH) conducts research in various fields related to the marine environment, such as climate change, functioning and ecosystem health, fisheries, aquaculture and general marine resources, problems of the coastal zone such as erosion the coasts and pollution, and the integrated management of coastal and marine areas based on the ecosystem approach. TETH housed in a newly constructed building 5200 sq.m. at the Campus Hill University in Mytilene, is well-equipped for high quality educational and research function. Apart from the specialized biological, oceanographic and hydro acoustic equipment for field investigations, available facilities include cultivation areas invertebrates and algae, laboratory rearing of marine organisms and fish for research purposes, and a fully equipped biology laboratories, Microbiology, Chemistry, Geology and Computer systems . The workshops are staffed by technical personnel supporting the educational work and works on designing and construction of experimental equipment. The Department has and manages the research / educational Amphitrite small coastal craft, designed and equipped to serve the research activities in the coastal zone.
