    hcmrThe Hellenic Centre for Marine Research is a public research Institute, under the Ministry of Education and is governed by the provisions of Law 1514/85 and Presidential Decree 164 (Official Gazette 131 / 03.06.03), is headquartered in Anavyssos and consists of three research institutes: (a) Oceanography ( b) Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters, (c) Marine Biology. Biotechnology and Aquaculture. It has three (3) manned oceanographic vessels, two (2) remote control cars and one (1) manned underwater vehicles for the conduct of marine research. The staff of HCMR consists of research, technical, legal, nautical and administrative staff which amounts to about 400 people in total. The staff of HCMR work in Anavissos, Agios Kosmas, Heraklion, Crete and Rhodes.

    The purpose of HCMR is to conduct scientific and technological research, experimental development and demonstration, dissemination and application of research results, particularly in the study and protection of hydrosphere, the organizations, the limits of the atmosphere, the coast and the seabed, physical, chemical, biological and geological conditions and govern the above systems, with (a) the production of products and services, (b) support in decisions concerning society, economy, culture, (c) economic holding either the HCMR or workers in this or by third parties.

    To achieve its objectives, the HCMR:

    • Designs and executes research and technology programs, projects and conducts studies with a similar purpose.
    • Promotes the development of relations and cooperation with international organizations, universities and similar research institutions and domestic and foreign legal and natural persons.
    • Trains scientists in those sectors.
    • Contributes to education, training and public awareness.
    • Provide scientific and technological information available the appropriate electronic interface.
    • It produces products and provides services related to his research interests.
    • He represents the country in international organizations with related activities.

    The Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW) is composed by the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Inland Waters. The general objectives of the research activity of the Fisheries Department, concerns the following areas: 1) Achieving rational management of fisheries, 2) Development of new fisheries management models, 3) Study the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems and 4) Development of a database and appropriate software for processing of fisheries data. The research and technical staff field includes scientists specialized in marine biology and ecology, fisheries biology, management of fish stocks, the fishing technology. The research activities of IMRIW are covering a wide range of maritime research and applications and contribute to the provision of high quality scientific information that supports the formulation of management plans within an ecosystem approach in the areas of fisheries and implementation of directives relating to the development strategy to achieve good environmental situation, and marine spatial planning. The infrastructure of the Institute and qualified staff allow the execution of even the scientific work, which proves that it has successfully completed the last five years more than 40 European and national research programs on subjects related to the activities included in this project.
